My name is Bailey Dumaine.  I am a language access and acquisition professional.  

I’m not familiar with that term.  What does that mean?

I’m so glad you asked!  I am a bilingual English and Spanish speaker with experience across a broad spectrum of education contexts.  Language acquisition refers to the work of teaching and learning languages.  Language access refers to the work of removing language as a barrier to accessing community services and resources.  In my past professional experiences, I have been:

• a classroom Spanish teacher for middle school, high school, and post-secondary students

• a curriculum developer for each of those levels, including producing and implementing a variety of instructional materials and assessments

• an educational interpreter and translator responsible for facilitating communication among a variety of stakeholders in educational communities

• a family support specialist for Limited English Proficient families, helping them navigate the complex structures of our public school systems

• a technology integration facilitator working to leverage the power of digital tools for the benefit of human beings 

• an advocate for broader, more seamless access to community resources for Limited English Proficient people, as is their right under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
